Elizabeth R: A Year in the Life of the Queen

In 1991 the British Queen Elizabeth was followed by a documentary crew for 12 months. The resulting film shows a side of the Queen never seen before. This includes her everyday duties and behind the scenes at official events such as a state visit to the United States. The finished documentary was to be pre-approved by the Palace but nonetheless the result shows the life of a usually camera shy monarch.

Mental: A History Of The Madhouse

In this BBC Documentary we learn the harsh reality of Britain's insane asylums, how they operated for over 100 years and their eventual closure. Those who were locked up in these bleak Victorian buildings were held like prisoners and subjected to experimental treatments often comparable to torture. Among the extreme treatments were electroconvulsive therapy, insulin therapy and frontal lobotomies.

Many of the patients had simply been 'Dumped' in the asylums when family's could no longer, or no longer wanted to look after them even though their ailments were often minor. In the film we hear from ex-patients, doctors and nurses about the history inside the madhouse.

Secrets Of The Virgin Queen: Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I was the queen of England from 1558 until her death in 1603 and she was one of the most interesting British monarchs in History. Known as The Virgin Queen as she never bore and heir she is indeed the last ruling monarch to be childless. In the documentary some amazing questions are asked such as why did she not Marry and have children to take up the throne, questions of her legitimacy and even the rumour that she was not a woman ?

In this 2013 documentary Stephen Fry on being awarded the honour of Freedom Of The City explores the square mile that makes up the old London. Fry opens tower bridge, visits the vaults at the Bank Of England and takes the dead mans walk at the old Bailey before taking advantage of one of the perks of the freedom of the city in walking sheep across London bridge.

The British secret service are perhaps the most famous intelligence agency in the world thanks to the books and films of Ian Fleming on the charismatic spy James Bond. But just how similar is the real Military Intelligence, Section 6 (MI6) to the fictionalized one we see in movie theatres ?

In the documentary we learn the history of MI6 formed in the years leading up to the First World War, predating the American CIA by over 40 years. We meet two men who can shed light on MI6 covert operations Sir John Scarlett a former chief of MI6 and Matthew Dunn a former MI6 Spy. The film tells of the daring missions undertaking by it's operatives for over 100 years and how some of what we see in The 007 films may not be as unrealistic as you think.

Raising The Mary Rose: A Timewatch Guide

The Mary Rose was an English war ship in the 16th century said to have been the favorite of British Tudor King Henry VIII. The ship was built at the start of the century and Launched in 1511, with restoration needed 35 years later in 1536 after plenty of action. The ship was finally sunk on 19 July 1545 near the Isle Of Wight and there it stayed for over 400 years. Then in 1971 the ship was rediscovered and efforts were made to salvage what could be saved from the wreckage, at the start by a small number of archaeologists, historians and divers then later a Trust dedicated to recovering the ship. Eventually it became clear not only could the salvage artifacts from the ship they may be able to raise the entire Mary Rose from the sea bed.

BBC Programme Timewatch tracked the work on the Mary Rose from early on and so has extensive footage from over 30 years. Together with the latest findings right up to 2015 this documentary covers one of the most important and ground breaking maritime archaeology projects ever.

The Fall Of Britain : Plague Of The Black Debt

In this documentary the case is put forward that Britain is on the verge of financial ruin. With borrowing at an unsustainable level the UK can't possibly repay their debts and history has shown this can only end in collapse. Figures provided by financial magazine Money Week paint a dark picture and they claim none of the facts they use can be questioned.

Reduced interest rates they claim was the hook that lead to this extraordinary level of borrowing. Now even a slight hike in these interest rates would make future borrowing impossible. Could Britain once ruler of two thirds of the globe really collapse ? How much debt is Britain really in ?
