Mental: A History Of The Madhouse

In this BBC Documentary we learn the harsh reality of Britain's insane asylums, how they operated for over 100 years and their eventual closure. Those who were locked up in these bleak Victorian buildings were held like prisoners and subjected to experimental treatments often comparable to torture. Among the extreme treatments were electroconvulsive therapy, insulin therapy and frontal lobotomies.

Many of the patients had simply been 'Dumped' in the asylums when family's could no longer, or no longer wanted to look after them even though their ailments were often minor. In the film we hear from ex-patients, doctors and nurses about the history inside the madhouse.
