In the 1970's and early 1980's Atari was the king of Video games both arcade coin operated and home gaming. Atari started with the simple Pong game for home use which proved hugely popular and the Atari 2600 in 1977 was a massive success. It seemed nothing could stop Atari's growth when the company was sold to Warner Communications and a string of popular games were released selling in the millions. But then in 1983 as quickly as it had taken off the Video Game industry crashed and brought Atari down with it. In media many blamed the highly publicized E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial game for the Fall of Atari, the game was made in just five weeks and is often rated as the worst video game ever.
From this came the story that Atari had buried millions of the unsold E.T. game cartridges in a dump in New Mexico. It was a story that really grew in recent years online as the dumping of the game was seen symbolically as the Atari graveyard. In the documentary Zak Penn explores the rise and fall of Atari and looks to stage a dig in the dump in Alamogordo, New Mexico to see if the story is true or a myth. There to see the dig among hundreds of Atari fans is the original designer of the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial game Howard Scott Warshaw.
