Muhammad Ali: When We Were Kings

When We Were Kings documents the build up, promotion, political and racial issues surrounding the 1974 fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, the film won the Academy Award For Best Documentary in 1996. In this boxing documentary we see how Ali used the fight and it's location in Zaire (which is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) to connect with his African roots and highlight racism against African-Americans.

The fight that would be known as "The Rumble in the Jungle" was Ali's chance to win back the world title he was stripped of when he refused draft into the US Army it was also the first major fight promoted by Don King. Controversy came with the option to stage the fight in a country ruled by Mobutu Sese Seko who had looked to use the fight to further his political standing despite his records of corruption, nepotism, and embezzlement.
