With huge traffic problems which would only get worse roads and existing tunnels in the Swiss Alps were being pushed to their limits by the 1990's. Something had to be done and it was left to the Swiss people to decide just what in a 1992 referendum, what they chose would be a gargantuan undertaking called The Gotthard Base Tunnel. The main tunnel would be 57 km (over 35 miles) through the highest and most extensive mountain range in Europe, the total would be a staggering 151.84 km (over 94 miles) of tunnels, passages and shafts. The Swiss people also had some further demands they wanted the work and the completed tunnel to be environmentally friendly, meet the highest safety regulations and a guarantee the tunnel would last for at least 100 years.
Note - The film was made in 2003, the tunnel is scheduled to open on the 2nd of June 2016 with a revised total cost of US$10.3 billion.
