The Cove: Dolphin Slaughter In Japan

The Cove is a 2009 documentary that went on to win the Academy Award For Best Documentary the same year. The film looks at the controversial fishing and capture of dolphins in Japan. Ric O'Barry is the key character in the film, O'Barry was a dolphin trainer who captured and trained dolphins for many years until a change of heart in the 1970's. O'Barry had captured and trained Dolphins for the TV show Flipper but seeing how inhumane it was to hold such intelligent and sensitive animals in captivity he became an activist against the very industry he once worked in.

Taiji, a whaling town in Japan is the main location for the film. Secret hidden cameras were set up in Taiji cove capturing shocking video of dolphins being trapped in the cove then captured and or killed.  We see there is a huge demand for captured dolphins in marine parks around the world and a market for dolphin meat in Japan even though it contains dangerous amounts of mercury.
